Saying Goodbye to 2017 with our Best Of.....First Up - Best Single Issue and Best Miniseries
2017 was a phenomenal year for comics. The sheer range and diversity of titles was incredible. Whether you had a thirst for large scale events, original miniseries, single issues or independent content, there really was something for everyone.
We'll also be covering this list in more detail on our recently launched Youtube Channel (link is at the bottom of this post), but for those who'd just like a quick rundown instead of listening to me rambling on, we've got you covered!
Again, this is all personal preference, feel free to chime in with what you guys thought were the outstanding issues, moments and stories from 2017.
Now on with the list!
Best Single Issue
DC
The list is only starting but already we are cheating as we couldn't separate two issues this year! This was an especially string year for DC, but for us the two single issues that stood above all others were...
Doomsday Clock #1
(w) Geoff Johns (a) Gary Frank
- Lived up to the hype, new ideas, respect for the past...

Batman Annual #2
(w) Tom King (a) Lee Weeks
- Batman & Catwoman's beginnings and end, emotional, thought provoking, King's end game for these characters?
Marvel
A bit of an up and down year for Marvel, Legacy had a rocky launch, sales struggled next to DC, but there were strong moments. Captain America and Daredevil are up there with the best of DC, but for me the best single issue of this year was...
Silver Surfer #13
(w) Dan Slott (a) Michael & Laura Allred
- Heartfelt, emotional, awe inspiring, right in the feels, pure joy...
Indie
Image continues to be a powerhouse, Aftershock ruffled a few feathers, Dark Horse and IDW continue to be strong, and Indie comics have never been more revered and popular. Almost every DC and Marvel writer/artist have also dipped their toes into the Indie world, and for me the best single issue was...
Deadly Class #26
(w) Rick Remender (a) Wes Craig
- The single best title on the shelves, raw, visceral, emotional, action packed, nostalgic, wonderful set up and payoff...
Best Miniseries
DC
This was a category that was especially strong this year. Considering Doomsday Clock was launched (though it's only two issues into a twelve issue miniseries so maybe a bit too early), Metal has been outstanding (and it's many tie-ins have been pretty essential. But to me the best of this year is...
Batman White Knight
(w & a) Sean Murphy
- Daring, original, innovative, stunning artwork, this is one series that has been consistently amazing with every issue. Four down, four to go...
Eight Issue Miniseries
Marvel
Secret Empire
(w) Nick Spencer (a) Andrea Sorrentino, Steve McNiven, Rod Reis, Daniel Acuna
- Certainly unique, often controversial, but never less than engrossing. And refreshing to read a Marvel miniseries where tie-ins are non-essential.
Ten Issue Miniseries
Indie
God Country
(w) Donny Cates (a) Geoff Shaw
- A great example of indie storytelling, just six issues, original idea, love that it explores that not all heroes have to be young, with a kick ass Grandad and a huge mythical sword. What else do you need?
Six Issue Miniseries
As I say, we do have a Youtube channel up and running now and if you'd like a little more detail on the titles mentioned, jump there - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Yjk_dtkm7Q
