Justice League - A Guest Review....
One of our aims with Coffee & Heroes has always been to create a community where comic fans can come together and express opinions, argue over which superheroes would win in a fight and generally hang out in a space where people have a love and respect for the comics industry.
To that end, we are always happy to publish reviews and opinions of other people that hopefully spark conversation and a bit of banter. Anything we do publish from others must fall within the guidelines of being informed and constructive, and not just mindless ramblings or rantings.
Our first guest reviewer is James Oliver, and the subject is Justice League. We have already let our own opinion be known (published elsewhere on this blog) and now it's time to get another perspective.
Please be aware that there are some spoilers included in the review, including after credits sequences.
Take it away James....
'It's been one week since Justice League was released to a rather mixed reception. On one hand there are those (myself included) who thought this was an absolute mess, then there are others who thought it wasn't great but nowhere near as bad as they had predicted.
My main problems with this film are as follows...
* It felt rushed
* Certain characters
* Introductions
* Steppenwolf is CGI
For those who have never bothered to watch a DC film before now, I can appreciate how the film sets up the 'world is under siege and we must save it' plot quickly. But for those who have watched every DC film since Man of Steel, this just felt like a slap in the face, giving us little back story on the antagonist and his motives in favour of CGI set pieces.
Certain characters such as Aquaman are reduced to nothing more than one-liners and mere sex appeal, whilst The Flash is the groups comic relief, ruining some of the more tense scenes in the film with his input and rather childish behaviour.
Besides their brief cameos in Batman vs Superman, the reintroduction to the rest of the team feels forced upon the audience. Here is ten minutes for you to see what their special abilities are, and as for Wonder Woman in particular thwarting that bombing, for what? That whole scene was simply filler in this reviewers opinion.
And lastly, the main villain of the piece, Steppenwolf is entirely CGI (which is so disappointing given what can be achieved with todays makeup and prosthetics) and his whole agenda is so cliche and generic. The only indication of something far worse to come is his throwaway line regarding Darkseid.
Also, that end credits scene. Yes, I was very happy to see Deathstroke appear as early as this but for this film set up Justice League vs whatever group Lex Luthor is putting together, why? There is so much more to be put in place before this should happen.
Personaly I think the DC executives need to lock themselves away, draw out a time line map and take it from there before any more projects are announced or even hinted at.
All opinions are my own.'
So there you have it, not a fan! As I say, the idea of all this is to generate discussion, not belittle other peoples opinions. If you loved it, no worries, but don't force your opinions on others, just argue your case respectfully.
If there are any other people who would like to submit reviews, be they comics or movies, or even report news announcements and offer opinions, feel free to drop us a line at coffeeandheroes@hotmail.com, and let's get this community going!
Until next time....
